ECHOES FROM THE MUSEUM

Podcasts and Event

Lainy Malkani, Shreepali Patel, Jack Ashby, Julia Schauerman

The podcast series explores the untold history of the extinction of the thylacine, more commonly known as the Tasmanian Tiger. They were the largest marsupial carnivores of the modern era, which were deliberately driven to extinction on their island home of Tasmania by European settler colonists. The project focuses on rarely seen Tasmanian Tiger skins held in the Museum of Zoology, Cambridge and draws parallels between its extinction and the genocide committed by the British on Tasmanian Aboriginal people. Largely absent from this history are the voices of Aboriginal elders and this series set out to redress that imbalance. The production team actively sought First Nation involvement to reframe dominant narratives and address the legitimacy of telling this story.

A collaboration between the Sonic Screen Lab, UAL and the Museum of Zoology, Cambridge. The project team included Prof. Shreepali Patel specialises in the preservation of identity, culture and heritage through powerful narrative experiences; journalist and author Lainy Malkani specialises in memory and ancestry storytelling while sound artist Julia Schauerman’s draws on her acoustic storytelling skills to create an immersive audio experience for audiences to engage with and enjoy.

The production, the first of its kind for the museum, culminated in a public engagement event, where members of the public were able to view online images of the Tasmanian skins, whilst listening to Episode 1. A live link up with Uncle Hank Horton was created giving members of the audience an opportunity to hear and ask questions. The event called Honest Histories was part of the Cambridge Festival (2025) and enabled the production team to also engage with audiences about the podcast process.
